According to a Variety report, director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) will direct the cinematic adaptation of hit videogame Bioshock for Universal Studios.

The videogame takes place in an underwater city based on the free market principles of author Ayn Rand where things have gone terribly wrong.

Verbinski said that he thinks that “the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is just brimming with cinematic potential. Of all the games I've played, this is one that I felt has a really strong narrative.”

At the moment John Logan (The Aviator) is in talks to write the screenplay. There is no word on an anticipated production start date.
