Encore! Jacques Loussier Plays BachAccording to a release on its Web site, Telarc has released Encore! Jacques Loussier Plays Bach, a two-disc collection of Loussier’s jazz interpretations of the 18th century composer’s work as well as a collection of his own classical compositions.

The collection highlights Loussier’s most prolific period during the early 1990s following a hiatus in the ’80s. Disc 1 is a recording from a 1991 session in Miravel, France, featuring Loussier’s popular trio comprised of the late Vincent Charbonnier on upright bass and Andre Arpino on the drum kit. The trio’s innovative jazz interpretation of Bach’s compositions lends itself to the intended aura and emotion of the music while creating a distinct jazz sound and sensibility. Being at once both jazz and classical provides a unique perspective of the dynamic capabilities of the two genres.

Disc 2, recorded in Prague at Czech Studio 1 in 1992, displays Loussier’s talents as a composer in a more traditionally classical forum. The compositions display Loussier’s interest in both modern and Baroque styles utilizing the more familiar sound of a chamber orchestra.

In comments on Telarc’s Web site, Jazz critic and author of the collection’s liner notes, Alyn Shipton, says, “This double album represents a demonstration of Loussier’s coming of age as a composer and the doubly enriched outcomes of his contemplative years away from the limelight, both as player and composer.”
