Teenagers Bypassing CDs?

Wed Feb 27, 5:30 PM GMT

According to a Los Angeles Times report, 48 percent of teenagers did not purchase a single CD in 2007, up from 38 percent in 2006.

Most teens appear to be getting their music online these days, whether from illegal or legal downloads. Legal digital downloads of songs increased 45 percent over last year’s numbers according to Nielsen SoundScan. As a result, iTunes has become the second largest music retailer in the country, just behind Wal-Mart and ahead of Best Buy.

However, NPD Group, a New York market research firm, reports that the increase in legal downloads is driven by people aged 36 to 50, leaving the question open about the download habits of younger generations.

In 2005, teenagers accounted for 15 percent of CD purchases, in 2007 that number dropped to 10 percent.
