According to jazztimes.com, alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett will release his 15th album, and first for Mack Avenue Records, on Sept. 23.
The report continues by saying that the album, titled Sketches of MD, is inspired by the work of the various artists who worked as sidemen for Miles Davis. The album was recorded live at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City with Garrett’s ensemble featuring pianist Benito Gonzales, bassist Nat Reeves, drummer Jamire Williams, and special guest tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders.
Garrett, who himself served as one of Davis’s illustrious sidemen, said in the report: “I wanted to document the band I took on the road for [2006’s] Beyond the Wall while we were working with Pharoah and also write some new songs. The idea of doing the Miles-related songs just evolved.”
Garrett’s last album was 2006’s Beyond the Wall, which was inspired by a spiritual and cultural journey through China, according to amazon.com.
