Billboard.com reports that George Clinton has enlisted the help of a slew of guest artists to appear on his upcoming release, George Clinton and Some Gangsters of Love, a collection of cover songs due Sept. 16. The report goes on to say that among the collaborators are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sly Stone, Carlos Santana, and RZA.
“It started out with me doing some doo wop songs,” Clinton tells billboard.com. “As we got going, people started coming through to be on it. It still is a concept album, but it’s taken a little bit of a different turn,” Clinton adds.
According to the report, Clinton chose to cover songs including the Impressions’s “Gypsy Woman;” Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t That Peculiar;” Shirley & Lee’s “Let the Good Times Roll;” and Barry White’s “Never, Never Gonna Give You Up.”
The report goes on to say that the album also contains one new original song, “Mathematics of Love” featuring gospel singer Kim Burrell as well as a new version of Parliament’s “Heart Trouble.”
Clinton also tells billboard.com that he plans to release a new P-Funk album early next year.
